Haiti may again delay election

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Haiti's presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for next month could be postponed, said Interim Prime Minister Gerard Latortue.

Financial difficulties and planning are just two of the reasons why the election set for Nov. 20 might be delayed up to three weeks, Haitian radio reported Tuesday.

If delayed, it would be the second time the election was put off. The first round of voting was supposed to take place in October, though officials postponed it to allow more Haitians to register to vote.

The elections would be the first for Haiti since former-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide left the country in 2004 amid increasing pressure from armed rebel groups.
