LASHKARGAH, Afghanistan, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Militants in southern Afghanistan have killed 18 police officers, including a senior official, in an ambush of a police convoy.
Approximately 150 police officers were traveling in Helmand province Monday afternoon when they were attacked by dozens of militants. Fighting between the police and militants continued until early Tuesday, the BBC reported.
Amanullah Khan, a senior police official in the province, was killed, a spokesman for the interior ministry said. Khan had been on his way to present a new district police chief when the ambush happened.
The ministry spokesman blamed the attack on "enemies of peace" -- a term Afghan officials often use to mean militants loyal to the ousted Taliban government. Taliban elements have been blamed for previous attacks in the region.
