Miers nomination splits conservatives

WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Sunday TV talk show discussion of President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court highlighted a split among conservatives in the issue.

Former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan and Dr. Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention differed on the matter on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Buchanan said Bush is threatening his legacy by nominating Miers, a longtime friend and personal attorney with no public views on issues like abortion. Buchanan said Miers' qualifications were "utterly non-existent" and he fears Miers may not be a strong advocate of overturning Roe vs. Wade.

Land said he trusts Bush as a man of his word. He said Bush knows Miers well enough to know how she will vote on issues important to conservatives, which is why he nominated her.

Miers was nominated Oct. 3 to replace the retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
