Haitian policeman abducted

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A Haitian policeman was abducted in Port-au-Prince Thursday amid continuing violence and kidnappings in the Haitian capital.

Authorities would not disclose the name of the officer, but said he was trying to arrest two other policemen accused of corruption, Haitian radio reported.

Kidnappings in Port-au-Prince have increased dramatically in recent months. An estimated 50 people were abducted in September alone.

Haiti's newest round of unrest began in early 2004 when armed rebels began taking over parts of the country, calling for the resignation of then-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who left Haiti in February 2004.
