WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- The track record for same-sex rights for U.S. Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers is mixed, based on her 1989 municipal record in Dallas, CNN reports.

During her campaign for a seat on the Dallas City Council, Miers filled out a questionnaire from the now-defunct Lesbian/Gay Political Coalition of Dallas and interviewed with the group, said founding member Louise Young, who kept a copy of the transcript.

In the questionnaire, Miers was asked: "Do you believe that gay men and lesbians should have the same civil rights as non-gay men and women?" Her response was "Yes," without any elaboration.

However, Miers did not answer directly when asked whether she believed qualified gay men and lesbians should be denied city employment such as police or firefighters because of their sexual orientation, the report said.

Monday, President Bush named Miers as his nominee to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who is retiring.
