FEMA wants $30M repaid from Florida

MIAMI, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- The U.S. government wants repayment of $30 million in last year's hurricane aid from 7,600 Florida households who have since received insurance settlements.

The money needs to be returned to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, reports The New York Times.

"When someone gets help from FEMA they sign an agreement that says if they end up receiving funds through their insurance coverage they can't double dip," said FEMA spokeswoman Frances Marine.

The action, earlier reported by The Sarasota Herald-Tribune, will affect people throughout Florida, the report said.

Some Miami-Dade residents have been indicted on charges of fraudulently obtaining aid, and FEMA has tightened its procedures. Marine said the $30 million was a tiny fraction of the $2.4 billion in aid that FEMA had distributed to victims of last year's hurricanes, the report said.
