Yemen claims progress in fighting terror

SANAA, Yemen, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh declared Tuesday that his country had achieved tangible progress in combating terrorism.

Speaking on the first day of the Holy Muslim month of Ramadan, Saleh said, "We have deployed all possible efforts in combating terrorism, achieving tangible progress, and we will keep on supporting international efforts in that regard."

Saleh added, "Terrorism, which constitutes an international evil threatening the world, necessitates the elimination of its causes, including the atmosphere encouraging such an evil."

He urged the international community to help developing countries confront the challenges of development and fight poverty and unemployment. He also called for international peace through the just settlement of conflicts, especially the Middle East crisis, to help stamp out the causes of terrorism.

Saleh suggested holding an international conference on terrorism and deciding on a definition of terror, which he said should be differentiated from the legitimate right of peoples to fight occupation.
