Russian/U.S. warhead milestone marked

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- United States and Russia issued a statement saying Russia had achieved another milestone in the conversion of nuclear warheads into fuel for nuclear rectors.

Moscow has completed the conversion of the equivalent of 10,000 Russian nuclear warheads into fuel that will be used to provide 10 percent of America's electricity, according to the statement issued by the White House.

The U.S. nonproliferation cooperation agreement with Russia eliminates highly-enriched uranium from dismantled Russian nuclear warheads and converts the material to peaceful uses.

In 1993, the United States and Russia signed an agreement to downblend 500 metric tons of HEU from Russian nuclear weapons.

The program, scheduled to be completed in 2013, is at its halfway point.
