North and South Korea to open joint office

SEOUL, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- North and South Korea will open a joint office for economic cooperation in the North Korean border town of Kaesong, Seoul's Unification Ministry said Thursday.

The office will open Oct. 25, in time for the start of the 11th round of inter-Korean talks on economic cooperation, which will be held there, Vice Unification Minister Rhee Bong-jo told reporters.

On Saturday North Korea will hold the first investment road show for South Korean businessmen in Kaesong, the Korea Times reported.

The two sides have been discussing the establishment of the office since the last round of inter-Korean talks in July in Seoul. It will be located in a building annexed to the office of the Kaesong Industrial District Management Committee, and will serve 16 South Korean officials and 12 from North Korea.

"We expect the office to upgrade the institutionalization of economic cooperation and boost direct bilateral trade, as it allows permanent consultation between South and North Korea," Rhee said.
