Two U.S. soldiers killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Two U.S. soldiers have been killed in separate attacks by suspected militants in different parts of Afghanistan, a military spokeswoman said.

A U.S. Army soldier was killed by a rocket-propelled grenade late Monday west of the southern city of Kandahar, said Sgt. Marina Evans. Another soldier was wounded and reportedly in stable condition.

In the second attack, said Evans, a U.S. Marine was killed by incoming rocket and grenade fire at a U.S. forward operating base near the eastern city of Asadabad.

"These men gave their lives for America and a free Afghanistan," said Brig. Gen. James Champion in a statement released Tuesday. "We will continue to aggressively take the fight to the enemy until they are defeated."

The names of the soldiers were withheld Tuesday until the soldiers' next of kin could be contacted.
