Lebanese journalist loses limbs in blast

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Paris-based Reporters Without Borders expressed "deep shock" over what it called a "barbaric attack" on a prominent anti-Syria Lebanese journalist.

"This shows what dangerous conditions Lebanese journalists have to work in," said a statement faxed to United Press International office in Beirut.

May Chidiac, an anchorwoman at Lebanese Broadcasting Corp., was gravely injured Sunday afternoon north of Beirut when a bomb planted in her car exploded. Chidiac, whose left arm and leg were amputated, was listed in stable condition Monday.

Lebanon's Interior Minister Hassan Sabeh predicted more assassination attempts similar to one that targeted Chidiac.

Speaking after an emergency security meeting, Sabeh said "the series of bombings and assassinations is going to continue as long we have not caught any trace in the conspiracy."

Chidiac is the second outspoken anti-Syria journalist to be targeted in four months. In June, Samir Kassir, a columnist for the daily newspaper An Nahar, was killed by a car bomb.

Several bombings and assassination attempts have occurred in Lebanon since the Feb. 14 slaying of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Several high-ranking officials and politicians -- including President Emile Lahoud and Prime Minister Fouad Siniora -- denounced the attempt on Chidiac's life and visited the hospital Sunday to check on her condition.
