Poland holds parliamentary election

WARSAW, Poland, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Voting began early Sunday in Poland's parliamentary elections, and polls indicate voters may topple the ruling former Communists.

Some 30 million people are eligible to vote in 14 hours, and various polls said 60 percent of them favor two center-right parties -- the Civic Platform, and Law and Justice parties.

The former communist Democratic Left Alliance was elected last time. Sunday's vote was the fifth free election following the transition from communism to multiparty democracy in 1989.

The two center-right parties differ on issues such as the budget and taxation, the BBC said.

Law and Justice, whose agenda includes tax breaks and state aid for the poor, has pledged to uphold traditional family and Christian values, while the Civic Platform strongly promotes free market forces and wants to introduce a flat 15 percent rate for income tax, corporation tax and a value-added tax.
