Gas prices changing Canadians' habits

TORONTO, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Soaring gas prices have most Canadians changing driving habits while expecting government to do more to bring costs down, a poll says.

The survey by EKOS Research Associates for the Toronto Star found that 35 percent of Canadians are driving less, 12 percent have changed habits by carpooling, walking more or switching to more fuel-efficient vehicles. Eleven percent have done both.

"After years and years of being told to be more energy-efficient, there has been virtually no movement," said Frank Graves, president of EKOS. "Now, massive numbers of Canadians are changing their behavior because of this."

Nineteen percent of women said they've started carpooling, while 9 percent of men were willing to share their ride. Sixteen percent of women are walking more, vs. 10 percent of men.

But more men, 43 percent, said they're making fewer trips. Twenty-seven percent of women said they're making fewer trips.
