GAZA, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- An Israeli official said Palestinians won't be allowed to build a port in Gaza unless Israel is given control of operations and the import and export traffic.

Israeli minister in charge of economic coordination with the Palestinian Authority, Haim Ramon, was quoted Wednesday by Radio Israel as saying, "Israel will request placing maritime activities in the port under its supervision."

"If we will not be able to reach an agreement with the Palestinians in that regard, there will be no port," he added.

The Palestinians had said several times that had received an Israeli green light for building a port in Gaza.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also decided to turn the former Israeli settlement of Nitzarim south of Gaza city into warehouses for the future port.
