Final Abu Ghraib court martial to begin

HOUSTON, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- U.S. Army reservist Lynndie England, who once admitted she abused detainees at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison, will not plead guilty in her latest court-martial.

The 22-year-old West Virginia woman, known worldwide for pictures that showed her taunting Abu Ghraib prisoners, is the final person to be prosecuted in the 2003 prisoner abuse scandal.

While England admitted she was guilty of conspiracy, maltreatment and indecent acts in a May court-martial, a mistrial was declared when ex-boyfriend Spc. Charles Graner Jr. took responsibility for some of England's acts.

A pretrial hearing was scheduled for Tuesday in the latest Houston court-martial and a jury was to be seated Wednesday.

Unlike her first court-martial, England will force the government to prove its case in the trial expected to last two weeks, the Houston Chronicle reported.

England, who faces up to 11 years in prison if convicted, said in May that she gave in to peer pressure when she and other U.S. soldiers tormented Iraqi detainees for "amusement." while visiting Graner.
