GAZA CITY, Gaza, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- The European Union said Tuesday it will increase aid to the Palestinians to help them rebuild their economy following Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the European commissioner for foreign affairs, said in a statement released in Gaza City that the 25-nation organization had "allocated 60 million euros ($73 million) to help revive the Palestinian economy and set up institutions capable of assuming the new mission of ensuring disengagement."
The announcement was made on the eve of a meeting in New York for the Quartet on the Middle East which comprises representatives of the EU, the United Nations, Russia and the United States.
The Quartet's envoy for overseeing Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, James Wolfensohn, is expected to present to the committee a full report on the pullout and a plan for meeting the development needs of the region.
