BOSTON, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- The Massachusetts Board of Rabbis wants the state to channel excess Hurricane Katrina donations and volunteer energy to the area's needy.
State officials, including Gov. Mitt Romney, have said the hurricane had triggered more donations and volunteers than the state needed for the number of evacuees being sent to Massachusetts. The state said it would take 2,500 evacuees, but only 209 have come, reported the Boston Globe Saturday.
The board of rabbis -- representing Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, and unaffiliated rabbis in the state -- has not spoken out on public policy in the past.
"The governor was prepared to help 2,500 people, so why can't the spaces that were allotted for them be given to people in Boston who don't have homes and can't afford to live here?" said Rabbi Barbara R. Penzner.
State officials said redirecting volunteer energy or donations is not a state task, and that decision would have to be made by the charitable organizations.
