NEW YORK, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Doctors say the quick thinking of a New York City father helped save a 10-year-old girl after she was gunned down in the street.
Alberto Colon, a father of four, said he was waiting at a red light in the Bronx, when he saw Mayelin Mejia shot in the abdomen, reported the New York Daily News Saturday.
Colon -- a school bus driver -- raced to the fifth-grader's side, wrapped her in his shirt and placed her in the back of his sport utility vehicle as her mother jumped in beside her. He rushed Mejia to the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital emergency room, cradling her in his arms.
"The doctor was telling me that if it wasn't for me, she wouldn't be here right now," Colon said. "I would appreciate if something happened to my kids there would be someone out there to be their guardian angel."
Police have asked the public to help them find the suspected gunman, 17-year-old Carlos Arauz, who allegedly was firing at 18-year-old Emanuel Owens, and shot Mayelin instead.
