Greek police clash with protesters

ATHENS, Greece, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Greek riot police used tear gas Saturday on protesters who were demanding Turkey be barred from joining the European Union.

The demonstrators threw gasoline bombs and stones at police, who responded with the tear gas, the BBC reported.

People from all over Europe had gathered in central Athens to attend a two-day rally -- Euro-Fest 2005 -- a rally the Greek government banned.

More than 100 members of Golden Dawn, described as an ultra-right Greek political party, protested Saturday in Athens and gave a Nazi salute beneath the red, white and black flag modeled on the swastika. Those on the left, protesting the Turkish entry into the EU, were offended by the Nazi symbols -- security intervened and those on the left then clashed with police.
