SYDNEY, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- An Australian appeals court has cut the prison term of a man convicted of a series of vicious gang rapes from 55 years to 26.
The court said that Bilal Skaf's crimes "cannot be regarded as in the worst category of aggravated sexual assault," The Australian reported. The judges also agreed with a defense argument that prosecutors wrongly described Skaf as the leader of the group.
Skaf was convicted of leading a group of men who lured teenage girls in western Sydney to remote areas where they were sexually assaulted. The prison term for his brother, Mohammed Skaf, was cut from 24 years to 19.
Prosecutors may file an appeal.
