Union certified at Canadian Wal-Mart shop

BURNABY, British Columbia, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Canadian officials have certified a union at a Wal-Mart shop in British Columbia, the union has announced.

United Food and Commercial Workers Canada Local 1518 said the B.C. Labor Relations Board certified the union at a Wal-Mart Tire & Lube Express in Cranbrook after a majority of employees there voted to be represented by the local.

Employees at three Wal-Mart locations in Quebec have already been certified as UFCW Canada bargaining units. The union said contract talks with Wal-Mart are underway there.

UFCW Canada's National Director Michael Fraser said in a statement the union will continue to organize Wal-Mart employees.

"Wal-Mart says that, given a chance to vote, their employees always reject the union," said Fraser. "Those days are over."

B.C. labor officials are considering applications for UFCW certification at two other Wal-Mart Tire & Lube Express outlets. Wal-Mart is challenging those applications, the union said.
