Stolen laptop with data on students found

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- San Francisco police have recovered a stolen laptop computer with data on more than 98,000 students but have no evidence of any identity theft from it.

The computer had data on current and former students of the University of California-Berkeley, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Shuki Alburati, 18, a City College of San Francisco freshman, is charged with buying the computer, taken from a UC office in March, from a woman and selling it for profit on eBay to an unsuspecting South Carolina man, university officials told the newspaper.

An analysis of the computer showed it had been reformatted, making it hard to determine whether anyone had accessed the identities of the students, the report said.

A university spokeswoman said: "There's nothing in the (police) investigation that points to any type of identity theft or credit card theft."

Alburati, who sells laptops and cell phones online, told The Chronicle he didn't know the new IBM X40 had been stolen. He has pleaded not guilty. The woman who allegedly sold it to him hasn't been identified.
