Probe sought on arms firm

LONDON, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Britain's opposition is demanding a probe into allegations a large British arms firm paid about $2 million to former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.

The lawmakers are asking the government to investigate BAe Systems, which recently signed a nearly $255 million contract to overhaul three former Royal Navy frigates for the Chilean navy, the Telegraph reported.

The Guardian has reported BAe had been identified in U.S. banking records as making payments to Pinochet.

BAe declined to address the specific allegations about the alleged links with Pinochet, or to comment on the call for an investigation. A spokesman said BAe is "committed to the highest standards."
