FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- The Fayetteville, Ark., school board heard testimony about 58 books that a parent claims violate state law because they are sexually explicit.
The school board listened to 26 people speak for and against the books in a two-hour meeting Tuesday, and scheduled a special meeting Thursday to hear from its attorney and librarians, the Fayetteville (Ark.) Morning News reported.
Also Tuesday, Arkansas Attorney General Mike Beebe sidestepped a question on whether the books violate Arkansas law. Such a decision is best left "for a court or properly instructed jury," Beebe's written opinion said.
Laurie Taylor -- the mother of two teenage daughters who challenged the 58 books -- said she was "incredibly shocked" at how controversial the subject has become and wants the school board to keep her daughters from seeing the books.
"I don't want to ban anything. I want to keep the books, all the books," Taylor said.
"It's not OK for my kids to access to this stuff," said Taylor who called the books "pornographic and vile."
