LONDON, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- British motorists, worried about a gasoline blockage by haulers to protest higher duties, indulged in panic buying at the pumps, ignoring government pleas.
The blockage to protest government's refusal to reduce gasoline duty is threatened for Wednesday.
Motorists were caught in hourlong lines in parts of London, northeast England, Scotland and Essex while garages in the West Country, Midlands and on Merseyside were forced to close, the Times of London reported.
The government says the country has an 80-day supply at normal rates, but warned of shortage if drivers continue to stockpile.
The blockage is threatened by the Fuel Lobby which wants a 10-percent cut in gasoline duty.
The British army has been put on standby to ensure supermarkets remain open. The government may impose rationing for priority users like doctors, nurses, police officers, firemen in the event of a lengthy supply stoppage.
