Old slave graveyard to be preserved

HANAHAN, S.C., Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A developer has agreed to preserve a cemetery dating back to the era of slavery that was rediscovered near Charleston, S.C.

Goose Creek Concerned Citizens is now searching for a second graveyard still hidden in the woods, the Charleston Post and Courier reported.

"The plantations, they are recognized and honored, but the people who made them, the laborers who made the owners rich, they are forgotten," said Hanahan City Councilman Levy Berry. "If we're able to get things right, we're going to really have to give honor where honor is due."

Abraham Williams Jr., a local resident old enough to have attended burials at Bee Cemetery, found the graveyard by exploring through the woods. Melvin Reid, a neighbor who said that Williams can no longer walk with ease, plans to begin the hunt for Gadsden Cemetery once the weather cools off, following Williams' directions.

E. Lee Barnes III, president of the Georgia company that plans to build 200 homes on the 77 acres around Bee Cemetery, said that the graveyard will be preserved, although a few burials might have to be relocated.
