BEIRUT, Lebanon, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Lebanese President Emile Lahoud traveled to New York Monday to take part in U.N. meetings despite being advised to stay home due to his controversial status.
Lahoud was accompanied by Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh and Justice Minister Charles Rizk in addition to his wife and a media and security team.
Prime Minister Fouad Siniora declined to make the trip, after advising Lahoud to stay home following the arrest of three former security chiefs and the commander of the president's own Republican Guards for suspected involvement in the Feb. 14 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Unconfirmed reports said the White House excluded Lahoud from an official ceremony hosted by President George Bush for heads of state and heads of delegations to the U.N. meetings.
