FEMA buying campers, trailers

WASHINGTON, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- The U.S. government is buying campers, trailers and mobile homes to house those made homeless on the Gulf Coast as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

About 128,000 "mobile houses" will become home for many for at least 18 months, said Melissa Price, a spokeswoman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Wayne Johnson, owner of Camper's Barn in Kingston, N.Y., sold FEMA 50 campers this past week worth $1 million -- at a discount, reported the New York Daily News Saturday.

"We gave them a break. We want to help out the people down there in New Orleans," Johnson said.

Some 300,000 are living in shelters throughout the South, but 28,000 of the trailers are "ready for deployment" and 12,000 more are "en route to staging areas," according to Price. "Assistance is available for up to 18 months."

FEMA is locating land to house the recreational vehicles, trailers and travel campers.
