MOSCOW, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- The president of Kyrgyzstan says closing down a U.S. military base there depends on continued improvement in the military situation in Afghanistan.

Kurmanbek Bakiyev met with reporters during a trip to Russia, his first state visit since becoming president last month, the Novosti news agency reported. Bakiyev said the base's future was not on the agenda in his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Bakiyev denied there were plans to allow a Chinese military base in his country.

"Although somebody might be holding such talks behind my back, China has not even attempted to make proposals like this to me personally," Bakiyev said.

The United States opened bases in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in 2001 in preparation for the invasion of Afghanistan, while Russia and Kazakhstan allowed use of their air space.

"The situation is known to be improving," Bakiyev said. "When it is settled, the deadline for the base's withdrawal will be considered."
