Hamas reveals military commanders' names

GAZA, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- The armed wing of the Palestinian Hamas movement Saturday revealed for the first time the names of its top commanders on its Web site.

The Izziddine al-Qassam Brigades' website showed photographs of seven of its leaders, four of whom were masked, with information on their positions in the group.

It is the first time the clandestine movement revealed the names and some pictures of the armed group's senior leaders, who are wanted by the Israeli authorities for attacks against Israel.

The information details their history as fighters and the terms they served in Israeli jails.

The listed names include that of Mohammad Deif, who recently claimed a resistance victory for the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and vowed that Hamas would not give up its weapons.

Analysts saw the move of revealing the names of the Izziddine Brigades leaders as competition with the Palestinian Authority over who was responsible for the Israeli pullout from Gaza.

They said it also indicated "overconfidence" by the group due to the Israeli withdrawal from the area.
