WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Former GOP Sen. Bob Dole has voiced a public plea from Judith Miller, the jailed New York Times reporter, for a federal shield law for journalists.
It was her first public statement since being jailed in early July for refusing to reveal her source in the unauthorized disclosure of the identity of a CIA agent, the Times said.
Dole read Miller's statement after a luncheon address at the National Press Club. In the statement, Miller repeated calls for law that would enable journalists to protect their sources.
In her brief statement, Miller said that "the battle for freedom has many fronts" and mentioned that she was just one of more than 20 American journalists facing possible jail sentences for refusing to identify confidential sources.
Dole, who said he had visited Miller in jail, commented, "For the life of me, I don't know why she is there," he said. "She never published anything."
