Alabama offers refuge to storm victims

MOBILE, Ala., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Alabamans found shelter Friday for storm refugees from Mississippi and Louisiana.

Several churches opened doors to evacuees in Mobile and several Baldwin County cities, the Mobile Register said. One church even hired its own buses to bring in more than 200 people from Mississippi Thursday.

Gov. Bob Riley discussed opening state parks and closed mental health facilities as safe havens. Volunteers are offering beds to the homeless through churches and Web sites.

The American Red Cross closed one shelter in Baldwin County, leaving it with only one open, although officials there say they are considering activating more.
