JAL flight makes emergency landing

OSAKA, Japan, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- A Japanese airliner flying from Fukuoka to Honolulu made an emergency landing in Osaka after a warning light malfunction.

JAL Flight JO58 was preparing to take off from Fukuoka Airport Tuesday night, when a system-warning lamp lit. The plane returned for an inspection, but since no problems were found, it took off.

However, as the plane was over the Pacific Ocean, the warning light went on again, prompting the pilot to make an unscheduled landing at Kansai International Airport in Osaka, the Mainichi Shimbun reported Wednesday.

The Fukuoka branch of Japan Airlines Domestic Co. said the first warning signal had indicated a problem with a system to prevent ice forming on the aircraft and called for an adjustment of air pressure in the cabin.

"There's a high possibility that the second warning was a malfunction, but the pilot acted cautiously and landed the plane," a JAL representative said.

The 76 passengers on board stayed overnight in a hotel and were expected to board a flight to Honolulu Wednesday evening.
