MCKEESPORT, Pa., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Authorities in McKeesport, Pa., worked Tuesday to identify up to 300 fetuses whose remains were found in the garage of a former funeral home director.
The fetuses were found Saturday when the ex-wife of Robert Winston Jr. broke into the garage of Winston's former home and called authorities, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
The remains, stored in 27 boxes, were in plastic containers filled with embalming fluid. While many were labeled, pathologists said it could take weeks to complete identification of up to 300 fetuses.
Winston, whose attorney said he is cooperating with Allegheny County, Pa., authorities, had a contract with Magee-Womens Hospital between 1999 and 2002 to cremate the fetal remains.
The coroner's office said it had subpoenaed all paperwork relating to the former Newman-Winston Memorial Chapel's dealings with the hospital.
"We've never had a case like this before," said Chief Deputy Coroner Joseph Dominick.
