Bush at 40 percent approval in Gallup Poll

PRINCETON, N.J., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- A new Gallup Poll show President Bush's approval rating at 40 percent -- the lowest Gallup rating of Bush's presidency.

The Princeton, N.J.-based research organization said the rating continued a "slow but steady decline" in Bush's approval among U.S. voters during 2005.

The poll -- conducted Aug. 22-25 -- showed 56 percent said they disapproved on Bush's performance in office.

Up until now, Bush's lowest Gallup approval rating had been 44 percent, recorded last month.

Gallup said Bush's approval rating has steadily declined since the first quarter of 2005, when his approval numbers were in the 50 percent to 52 percent range.

The new poll shows supports for Bush among independents has fallen to 32 percent -- down from an average of 46 percent in polls conducted in July.

Among Republicans, Bush pulled an 82 percent approval rating -- down from his Gallup average of 92 percent approval among Republicans during his entire presidency.

Bush's approval rating among Democrats in the most recent Gallup poll was 13 percent.

A Harris Poll issued Wednesday showed President Bush's job approval rating at 40 percent -- the lowest it's been during his presidency. The American Research Group issued a poll Monday showing the president's approval rating at just 36 percent.
