AIDS-fighting fund halts money to Uganda

GENEVA, Switzerland, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has suspended grants to Uganda for "serious mismanagement" of funds, the Financial Times reported.

The fund has distributed some $45 million to the African nation praised widely for its anti-AIDS efforts, but said audits found a $280,000 shortfall and lack of proper accounting.

The Geneva, Switzerland-based fund said in a letter that the Ugandan government must reorganize the way it receives and distributes money to make certain a special program management unit within Uganda's Health Ministry no longer handles fund monies.

Ugandan officials were not immediately available for comment.
