At least six people in Switzerland are dead or missing, including two firefighters buried by a mudslide.

Flooding has cut rail service and closed roads. Hundreds of people, including many tourists, were evacuated to emergency shelters. In the capital, Bern, more than 300 people were forced out of their homes.

Heavy rains have caused the flooding and hampered efforts to prevent further floods and restore electricity.

In the northern Balkans, damage has been even worse, with more than 40 deaths reported in Romania and Bulgaria, and massive evacuations in both countries. Rivers in Croatia and Slovenia have also surged over their banks.
