KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Malaysia's former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who was fired over a pamphlet that claimed he was a homosexual, has won a $1.2 million libel case.
The high court in Kuala Lumpur ruled in his favor Thursday, with Judge Hishamuddin Yunus saying the damages were high to reflect the gravity of the allegations and the lack of an apology.
The pamphlet, "Fifty Reasons Why Anwar Ibrahim Cannot Be Prime Minister," was distributed nationwide in 1998 while Anwar was in office. It included allegations Anwar was corrupt and a homosexual.
The author, Khalid Jafri, is critically ill in a Kuala Lumpur hospital, the BBC reported.
Because of the pamphlet, Anwar was fired, and imprisoned for six years for corruption and sodomy. The sodomy conviction was eventually overturned, and he was released from jail a year ago.
