WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Russell Feingold has become the first U.S. senator to call for a deadline for getting the troops out of Iraq.
In a telephone interview, the Wisconsin Democrat told the Washington Post his constituents have become increasingly unhappy with the Bush administration's Iraq policy. He said he has held 15 town meetings during the August recess.
Feingold's proposed deadline is Dec. 31, 2006.
Asked about President Bush's argument that a deadline would provide an incentive to the insurgents, Feingold said: "I think he's wrong. I think not talking about endgames is playing into our enemies' hand."
A resolution introduced in the House of Representatives calls for withdrawal to begin by Oct. 31, 2006. Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., has said withdrawal should begin as early as possible next year, but he has not mentioned a specific date.
