Coretta Scott King suffers stroke

ATLANTA, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- The widow of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King was recovering in an Atlanta hospital Wednesday from a stroke.

A hospital spokeswoman told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that King was admitted Tuesday, but declined to discuss her medical condition and said only that she was "resting comfortably."

Close friends told the newspaper the 78-year-old has had several small strokes since she was diagnosed this spring with a heart condition called atrial fibrillation, which causes irregular heartbeats or fluttering.

King is known internationally for her work on behalf of human rights and on peace and women's issues. She spoke out early about the pandemic of AIDS in Africa and the United States.
