Bush protesters startled by gunfire

CRAWFORD, Texas, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Protesters gathered outside of U.S. President George Bush's Texas ranch were startled by gunfire from a neighbor who said he's fed-up with their presence.

For more than a week, Iraq war protesters have camped outside the ranch in Crawford, where Bush is vacationing for five weeks. Sunday afternoon, neighbor Larry Mattlage said he'd had enough of the media circus, and fired several gunshots into the air.

"Well, I'm getting ready for dove season," Mattlage, 62, told reporters. "Figure it out for yourself."

The protesters are led by Cindy Sheehan, a California woman whose son was killed in Iraq last year, who has vowed to remain outside of Bush's ranch until the president meets with her.

Sheehan has gained wide national attention, and Mattlage said he's had enough of the media, noise and disruption.

"Would you want someone invading your house for a long time and blocking your view and blocking your road?" Mattlage said.

McLennan County Sheriff Larry Lynch said Mattlage had broken no laws, as he was on his own property and didn't aim at anyone.
