Uganda radio station shut for debate show

KAMPALA, Uganda, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A Ugandan radio station has had its license suspended after airing a debate it was ordered not to broadcast.

KFM was closed Thursday after airing a debate about the helicopter crash that killed Sudanese Vice-President John Garang, the BBC reports.

Garang died July 30 when the helicopter he was in crashed in Sudan.

He was flying from Uganda where he held diplomatic meetings with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni had told the media not to speculate on the cause of the crash.

Some supporters of Garang think the Sudanese government was responsible.

Museveni himself acknowledged that possibility shortly after the crash.

Uganda Information Minister Nsaba Buturo said KFM's licence was suspended because the program violated broadcast standards.

Ugandan politicians and the Uganda Journalist Association condemned the move.
