Surrogate baby in legal limbo

BRUSSELS, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A baby girl born to a Belgian woman who agreed to be a surrogate mother for a Dutch couple remains in limbo while officials try to sort out her parentage.

Piet Hein Donner told the Belgian newspaper De Standaard the baby, known as Donna, remains in the Netherlands in violation of international treaties. Donna is being cared for by foster parents.

Donner said the Dutch couple has not been allowed to proceed with adoption.

There are a number of questions in the case, including whether the mother, after making arrangements with the Dutch couple, tried to sell the baby to a gay couple in Belgium. The Dutch couple says they only paid the mother's expenses, but there are allegations she sold them the baby.

Recently, the mother said the girl's biological father is her own partner, not the Dutch man.
