Iran floods kill at least 28 people

TEHRAN, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Floods and heavy rain have killed at least 28 people in the northern Iranian province of Kalestan in the past two days, officials said Thursday.

The Iranian News Agency quoted the deputy chief of the province's Department of Construction Affairs as saying the floods cut off power in 70 villages, destroyed more than 1,500 hectares (3,700 acres) of farmland and completely destroyed 300 residential units.

Also agricultural equipment was destroyed and large numbers of cattle perished in the floods, the worst in many years.
