White House vetting Roberts documents

WASHINGTON, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- The White House is checking documents related to U.S. Supreme Court nominee John Roberts' legal philosophies for potential political problems.

While thousands of pages of documents are already in the public domain, many more await Bush administration permission before they are released to senators considering Roberts' nomination, The Washington Post reported Wednesday. The U.S. Senate is to take up the nomination early next month.

The White House has said it will hand over all documents by the time the Senate Judiciary Committee convenes for hearings on the nomination. Those sessions are to begin Sept. 6, with many papers released to senators within two weeks, the Post said.

The White House is trying to determine which documents might be used to try to derail Roberts' ascension to the Supreme Court, the newspaper reported. Already legal opinions regarding affirmative action and what Roberts termed the "so-called right to privacy" have been bumps in the road to Senate confirmation.
