Thousands pray against Israeli withdrawal

JERUSALEM, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Tens of thousands of Israelis Wednesday prayed at Judaism's holiest existing site against the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and four West Bank settlements.

The withdrawal is due to begin next week.

"Just like in Sodom, the government has decided on an action that is inconsistent with morality," one rabbi said, according to the Ha'aretz newspaper. He was referring to the Bible's account of the licentious town of Soddom that God destroyed.

Former chief rabbis Avraham Shapira, Mordechai Eliyahu and Ovadia Yosef, of who is the spiritual leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, took part in the rally.
