NARAL ad rankles Roberts supporters

WASHINGTON, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Supporters of Supreme Court nominee John Roberts claim an abortion rights advocacy group's attempt to link Roberts and violent protesters is "slanderous."

NARAL Pro-Choice America plans to air an ad that claims, "John Roberts filed court briefs supporting violent fringe groups and a convicted clinic bomber." The ad also says, "America can't afford a justice whose ideology leads him to excuse violence against other Americas."

A White House spokesman said, "The NARAL ad is outrageously false, bordering on the slanderous." Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman said, "NARAL has shown how far they will go to slander a good man for political gain," The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

NARAL claims Roberts' role in the case showed a support for violent groups. During arguments in Bray vs. Alexandria Women's Health Clinic, Roberts said the government was not defending "petitioners tortious conduct" but seeks "proper interpretation" of the Ku Klux Klan Act that some sought to use to stop abortion clinic protests, the Post said. The court ruled 6-3 against the clinics.
