Brazil: Lula says PT aiding scandal probe

BRASILIA, Brazil, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Monday that federal authorities are helping lawmakers with their ongoing corruption probe.

Lula said the congressional committee investigation a bribery scandal involving his ruling Workers' Party, or PT, have the cooperation and assistance of his administration.

In June, allegations emerged that the PT was paying certain lawmakers more than $12,000 in kickbacks funded by private investors to back key votes in the Congress.

The Brazilian president said Monday during a nation radio address that any member of his PT involved in the alleged payoffs "would have to pay" for what they had done.
