PHOENIX, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Don Goldwater, a Republican activist and nephew of late Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater, is hoping his famous name will lead to the governor's office.
Goldwater ran for a state Senate seat in 1992 but lost in a three-way GOP primary. The long-time Republican Party activist quit his job as special-events coordinator for the Department of Administration earlier this week, the Arizona Republic reported.
He says he would cut taxes, eliminate government waste, privatize some government services and fully implement Proposition 200, a measure that denies state services to undocumented immigrants.
Goldwater says Gov. Janet Napolitano has moved the state "in the wrong direction."
"No longer can we turn a blind eye to illegal immigration hoping that it will just go away," said the 50-year-old Goldwater.
