Japan to recognize WWII military rape

TOKYO, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Japanese archives in Tokyo opened an exhibit on war time atrocities Monday, including details of women forced into sexual slavery.

Photos of 140 "comfort women", a name used for women forced to have sex with Japanese soldiers during World War II, and artifacts about them were being prepared for viewing since 2002, the Chinese state news agency Xinhua reports.

Nearly 1,800 Japanese citizens donated funds for the exhibit.

Curator Nishino Remiko urged Japanese media to give extensive coverage of this and other Japanese war crimes, saying, "Japan should make deep remorse on its wartime crimes on neighboring countries."
